Counseling Activities

Individual Counseling

How do you know this need exists? - The needs for individual counseling will be assessed through referrals from teachers, parents and other staff members. Students will come in and an evaluation will be completed to see if they would fit into a small group for counseling. If they would not be a good fit at the time, the school counselor will work with the student one-on-one. School counselors will also complete individual counseling for students in crisis.

What is the goal? - The goals for individual counseling will be geared toward providing support for the student in order for them to achieve their highest potential in academic, personal and social areas. Individual counseling will be completed in a timely manner and if the school counselor notices a higher need for the student, they will refer them to outside counseling in order to best serve the student.

In order to build trust with the student, what is shared in their time with the counselor will stay confidential unless the student is going to hurt themselves, hurt someone else, or someone is hurting them.

Small Group Counseling

How do you know this need exists? - Some students may need extra practice with social skills, learning strategies, or to discuss issues a student may be working on outside of school. Students will be referred to small groups and assessed for whether or not they are a good fit for the groups available to them at the time. Parent permission will be obtained before the start of the group.

What is the goal?- The goals of small group vary based on the topic of the group. Group activities will enable students to master the learning objectives stated in the lesson plan. Activities will be comprehensive, developmentally appropriate, and directly connected to the school counseling program goals.

Groups will last 6-10 weeks. Perception and/or outcome data will be collected. Confidentiality will be discussed with students, but as it is a group of students, it is not promised.

Classroom Guidance

How do you know this need exists?- Planned instruction delivered to ALL students is crucial. Guidance lessons will be aligned with the school counseling program's vision, mission and goals and promotes the knowledge, attitudes and skills of students based on the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors. We will be following a curriculum called "Conscious Discipline" obtained through a district grant.

What is the goal?- The goal is to meet students needs academically, socially, and emotionally and giving students tools to succeed. By doing so, we create a more preventative counseling program.
